Although we began primarily as a pediatric therapy center, we have expanded our services to include adult Occupational Therapy as well as Couples and Parenting Therapy.
Children with sensory challenges who are not treated in childhood may grow into adults whose daily lives continue to be affected by their inability to accurately or appropriately interpret sensory messages. Adults who struggle with sensory processing may have difficulty performing routines and activities involved in work, close relationships, and recreation. Adults who received and benefited from therapy in childhood may still find themselves struggling when they are presented with new life experiences or changes in their daily lives.
Adults with sensory processing difficulties may feel they have been misunderstood all their lives. They may even feel that sometimes they don't understand themselves.
“Why don't I like to be in large groups, or go shopping, or out to eat?” “Why am I so bothered by that sound?” “Why do I feel so lethargic and unmotivated?”
At Come Play, STL, when adults receive treatment for their sensory difficulties, our goal is to facilitate understanding of themselves and their sensory system. Direct treatment such as Occupational Therapy can lead to changes in the way sensations and sensory messages are perceived. Our therapy also focuses on identifying strategies such as avoiding or decreasing the intensity of those sensory fatiguing relationships and/or situations that lead to feeling out of control or down. We also work together with the adult to identify sensory techniques they can implement at home or at work.
Our ultimate goal for our adult clients with sensory processing difficulties is to help them to live fulfilled and happy lives, to have the tools to create meaningful relationships, and to learn to read their body’s messages so they are better able to handle life’s challenges.
Our highly trained Occupational Therapists are specialized in implementing therapy techniques that are tailored for adults, including implementation of the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP).
Our process for adult occupational therapy begins with an initial conference call with the potential client to discuss your concerns and goals in order to determine if Occupational Therapy is an appropriate intervention for your needs. Once the initial conference call is completed and it is established that Occupational Therapy is appropriate, an evaluation will be completed to assess the sensory system, including reactivity, sensitivity, and regulation. Once you have completed this evaluation, a follow-up meeting is held. Our Occupational Therapist, you, and anyone else you feel should attend, will meet to discuss the assessment findings, recommendations, goals, and answer any and all questions you may have. We want you to leave feeling confident and prepared to begin the therapy process. Once this meeting is completed, reoccurring therapy will begin with the frequency and duration to be determined by the treating therapist.
Parenting therapy is a specialized form of therapy that works with parents to help them face difficult moments in parenting. Parenting therapy also helps parents identify, address, and manage their own past or present experiences that may be affecting the way they relate to their child. In some cases, parenting therapy may also help parents better communicate between each other to maintain a cohesive and structured parenting approach.
Parenting therapy provides a judgement-free zone for parents to discuss tough moments in parenting and learn how to better manage these tough moments moving forward. Overall, parenting therapy aims to provide parents with the necessary knowledge, tools, guidance, and support to take care of their children in the most ideal way possible.
Parenting therapy can offer many benefits for both parents and their children. For parents, parenting therapy offers:
Valuable education on how to respond to their children
Support during tough parenting periods
A safe place to process emotions
Awareness of community resources
Strategies to better address family functioning
Our process for beginning Couples and Parenting Therapy starts with a consultation with our Parent-Support Therapist. **Couples and Parenting Therapy is available exclusively for parents of Come Play, STL clients
